On October 15, 2011, a peaceful ‘Occupy Toronto’ demonstration took place against the nation’s financial system, more than 3000 protesters congregated at St. James Park, downtown Toronto. The march started at the heart of the financial district King and Bay and slowly moved towards St. James Park. A small group, chanted ‘We Shall not be moved!’ as the demonstration grew larger. The global day of marches are inspired by the grassroots Occupy Wall Street movement in New York City, which began on Oct. 1st. Demonstrations took place in at least 15 Canadian cities, including Vancouver, Calgary, Winnipeg, Toronto, Montreal, Quebec City and St. John’s. In Spain, over 150 thousand demonstrators took over Plaza del Sol, Madrid.
